I think Earl Smith said if a 6 year old is emmetropic, bad sign. If the 6 year old is +0.25 or slightly more, less likely to be nearsighted.

I think we've all noticed that one parent myopic predicts likely myopia in some of the children, and 2 myopic parents increases the probability.
e.g. my old Rx -6. spouse -3. son -5 at age 14.
 
Isn't the question really, "What can be done to prevent a 6-YO from becoming myopic?" -- Nothing?
