"This is the first case of bird flu in Thailand so far in 2006. The country's efforts to combat the disease--by aggressively culling domestic poultry, reimbursing farmers for their losses and being very open about their endeavors--have made it a model for other nations to follow. (See Indonesia for a text book example of what not to do.)
Even model efforts, however, may not be enough to defeat this virus. And this latest death from Thailand is as good a time as any to remind ourselves that once a human pandemic occurs, the warning signs will change. It won't be sick and dying poultry we need to look for but clusters of sick and dying nurses, doctors and other medical personnel.
In a pandemic, many, many more people will infect each other than will be infected by handling diseased chickens.
