Opinion: Should optometrists perform laser eye surgeries? - Deseret News

Optometrists perform an important service. As a patient, I have needed them; as a society, we need them. An optometrist is trained to “measure” the eye. They can measure our eyes and help us correct poor vision. At times, I know they do pick up medical concerns that are beyond their training, and thankfully they refer their patients to licensed ophthalmologists. All those functions are important and valued.

All I can say is, she's not well informed. Optometry will move on.

Don't see a definite issue with that quote other than the "measure the eye" bit. At times something can come up that is beyond one's training and/or one's comfort level. Likely referrals to someone else comes up more often on the opthalmology side - for one example the referrals to a retinal specialist.

It also leaves out a HUGE issue with having to refer for insurance reasons like not allowing ODs on panels.
