Flew in for the day. You know us important people can do that. Just kidding. Only the poor people can. B/C we have to work through Friday. Just went to the exhibits. Big ones were, CIBA, Vistakon, Eyefinity, B&L, and othe standard ones. I mostly looked for cool stuff while Tom was in class learning why he should have a crash cart in the office at one of his CE meetings. You know, he wants to have the record for the most CE in one year. Too bad that the amount of CE doesn't reflect in the quality of OD. Just kidding. We all know that Tom does the best he can.

I am curious, for anyone who has been to both SECO and East/West, how do the 2 compare? I 've been to East/West each year and I think the speakers and exhibits are very good. I've never been to SECO.

I've never been to East/West but I'm guessing many of the speakers are the same. SECO had some great ones and some that left me scratching my head how they ended up on stage.

I think knowledge should be only one of the criteria of a speaker.......how about a little enthusiasm and personality. Unfortuately some of the speakers I listened to (and paid for) were mediocre.

But overall the education was excellent. I sat through more retinal lectures with more information than my small brain could soak in. One lecturer in paticular that I was impressed with was Steve Charles, MD, a retinal specialist out of Memphis. He strikes me as a very.....no let me make that, VERY smart guy. He has some excellent information (in an interesting way). His partner, Mohammad Rafieetary, OD was great also.

Also, if there are any speakers out there, vary your jokes from year to year. Many people may hear you speak more than once.

And of course, the best part of my trip: I got to meet Peter Dodge. That was worth the price of admission all by itself. :p

Jonathan:

I have attended both meetings and have had the opportunity to present at both.

SECO is more established and perhaps has more exhibitors. The quality of the speakers is about equal. Attending both meetings would be redundant. So my advice is stick close to home.

You would think this would apply to Optometry school profs. as well, but we all know that it does not.
