I think when I was in school from 1986-1990, there were only about 16 schools. By 2027 there will be almost twice that number. What other profession are trying to drown themselves?

Makes a lot of sense when you can get a same day walk in appointment with an optometrist in most decent sized cities. Meanwhile, it can take a year to get in to see a neurologist. Maybe open some more neurology programs?
 
Its kind of amazing when you think about what is happening economically; corporate interest push for the expansion of education, education paid for by the students, subsidized by the government or at least supported with guaranteed loans, profession grows beyond the need, cost of optometric labour is suppressed, and corporate profits get a boost.
