Billionaire Optometrist Snaps up $65 Million New Build in Manalapan, Florida - Mansion Global

Anyone know billionaire OD Bernie Wertheim? He's got a sweet new house!

He has a whole lotta Brain Power.

Interesting, he is 86, and still buying new properties. Hoping he gets his money's worth.
BPI. Tints right?
Brain Power Inc.

Must have been worth selling the patent rights and then invested well.

I did read he was divorced in 2025 so he is ready for whatever I guess.

Are you familiar with the tint units for tinting spectacle lenses?

Maybe he had a prestigious practice with upscale patients.
Dr. Herbie, as his friends call him, is a chatty 85-year-old optometrist and businessman who over a period of decades astutely put profits from BPI, a company he founded that makes optical tints, into a portfolio of successful stocks–from Microsoft and Apple to Amazon and aerospace firm Heico. In 2019, Forbes published an article about Herbie, calling him “the most successful investor you’ve never heard of,” worth an estimated $2.3 billion at the time. Since then, his investments have greatly increased in value.

Dang, I got 3 or of 4 of those. If only I had added Heico to my portfolio.
Microsoft--yep
Apple-- Uh huh
Amazon--for sure

Heico--dang, I missed out on that one.

I have seen previous articles about him. He has also donated huge sums to optometry schools.

I wonder if he enjoyed going into the office and fitting those ole B&L B3 and B4's back in the day? Or maybe he was majorly into those old PMMA lenses?

So how the heck did he think of those dip thingies for gradient tints in those tint tanks. He made a tint called True Black that was more resistant to turning pinkish/reddish as it got older. Just an all around smart dude.

Apparently the really valuable innovation was a liquid tint for plastic lenses that added UV filtering.... just as the US government needed to starting buying millions of sunglasses to fight in Vietnam...

When I was in college there was a young man named Bill. Bill majored in partying, drinking and playing some stupid card game called Hearts. He was getting D's and F's. Came back every Thursday night beyond blasted and was near death every Friday morning. Also promised never to touch another drop. Rinse and repeat weekly. For Spring break when all the cool kids were going to Florida, he and other D/F boy decided to go to Arizona and to check out the girls on the ASU campus. In the meantime he got notice that he was being withdrawn from school.

So, he and the other boy decided that wanted to go to ASU, but could not get in. So... they moved there and attended a community college for two years trying to get their act together. After that he made it into ASU.

He was most likely never to succeed, but was super chatty and was a very fun guy to hang with.

30 years later he had his assistant, Karen, who was one of the young ladies on our sister floor, arrange a 30 year (or was it 35?) reunion. He smartly arranged it in Oak Brook Illinois on Saturday night of Thanksgiving weekend, when many would be home to visit family.

He was wearing a very nice baseball jacket with the name Bohica Industry (that was the name we called our floor in college). He told me that he proudly has attended a baseball game in every ballpark in the nation. Karin always makes all his arrangements. He said he would be happy to visit any time if there was a Cubs game.

So, I asked Bill what kind of work he is doing. He told me he is the president and CEO of Bohica Industries. Hah hah, right. He told me he has a cyber security company, and his number one client was the U.S. government. So how much could he really be doing, right? He told me, IIRC that he did like $87 million in business the prior year. Wait, could that possibly be true, from such a big loser like Bill?

I told my IT guy this story a couple of weeks ago. So my IT guy looked him up on Indeed and maybe some business publication, and found out that last year Bill's company did $200 million in business. Mostly with the U.S. government. Wowie Kazowie. That would be a whole lotta eye exams.
