Don't Give Out Old Candy!!!

Sheesh... My daughter really likes York Peppermint Patties and she said, "Ew, this one tastes funny!" I looked at it and you know how chocolate looks when it gets old? It gets this freeze-dried look: all white and gross looking. I looked at the wrapper and coincidentally had a contest on it and it had entry dates from LAST YEAR. Either we got a re-gift from our neighbor or they held some candy from last year!!!

HOW RUDE! :mad:

With the extreme liability in selling old food, I seriously doubt it. The store owner would have to be really dumb. So I think it was the homeowner who did it, not thinking that it would be a problem.
 
I heard the shelf-life of chocolate is only 6 months....3 months for Nestles Alpine White (it was sold back in the 80s- I was looking to see if I could get any of it because it was good!- that's how I know about the shelf-lives!)

Oh well, just make a bunch of kids sick. Who cares huh?

Maybe you don't care but I do and I hope my message carries some weight with people. Think about what you are doing when you give out candy. Give them the good stuff. Don't give them old, disgusting candy.

Not trying to defend teh use of stale-dated candy, but chocolate with the white coating of itself is not old. That's called "bloom" and can occur on recently made chocolate, too. It's a problem of temperature, humidity, and improper storage. Chocolatiers will use chocolate with bloom, but not for fine candy.

Hint: close your eyes and enjoy....it's CHOCOLATE, after all! :D

I don't understand your response to my quote. Read it. I said throw it out! I never said to give old candy to kids. I agree with you not to give out old candy.
 
Screw em. They need to start learning adults can't be trusted. Bite into a nasty piece of chocolate (or a rotten olive or piece of tuna for that matter), it builds character. Especially if you learn to gracefully remove your self from the conversation and dispose of the nasty morsel without gagging or breaking a sweat. Then return to the social gathering and re-enter the conversation at the exact moment you left it without missing a beat.

That takes talent damn it! Better to teach 'em while their young.

Merrill... Don't assume. You know what this means right? I don't think you are an expert at everything nor do I think that you can analyze the chocolate from your location since you didn't see it.

Look, I didn't think this would turn into a big controversy.

Maybe you didn't intend to mean this but it sounds like you mean that I shouldn't be sending out the alarms. In other words, "Who cares, there are far more important things to worry about." Maybe there are, but I also don't think that people should be giving out old candy.

Sorry, but from the responses I'm getting, everyone seems to think that I'm making a mountain out of a molehill. I'm not. I only said to not give out old candy. That's not difficult to understand nor should it be a big debate. Just leave it at that.

It really seems like most people are coming to the defense of the neighbor for some reason. Why not come to my defense? What's wrong with saying that some people aren't intelligent enough to give out good candy? Just had a glaucoma patient today who missed her appointment by 6 hours because she said she thought her appointment was at 4. She was going on and on at the front desk insisting that her appointment was at 4. After talking with her awhile she recanted and said she was at the casinos and she laughed like it was no big deal. This was the third time in a row that she missed her appointment time! So do you really think that everyone is capable of rational thinking?

I know you've all had patients who have said and done some pretty dumb things. You guys go on and on and on. So don't be surprised to find that people really think that it's okay to give out candy that has been stored away for a century.

I'm really not talking to any of the sensible people here you know. If you don't do it then fine. You all think I'm talking about YOU. My god, it was just a comment!!! Let's move on! :D

Why is it that anyone who has different knowledge base and tries to say something is dissed? Because of your image of me, Keith, you missed the part where I said, "Not trying to defend the use of stale-dated candy..."

Your next post belies a single-mindedness. Sorry that I offended your sensibilities. I was having a bit of fun.
