The whole "glasshole" thing killed it.

If you ridicule these types, you win. That's the modern-day strategy. See: John Stewart, Steve Colbert, etc.
 
Everything new is ridiculed.

A phone the size of a small suitcase? Who needs that with pay phones everywhere?

The Internet? Get out of your moms basement and meet a girl or some actual people.

A car? That can run out of gas? My horse never runs out of gas and doesn't need to be cranked.

Hand washing? That Semmelweis is a quack who probably is selling soap on the side.

The difference is things like Google glass and the Segway just aren't great ideas for most people.
