That's very nice...how about "local doctor volunteers to help those in her own country". You know the one she lives in.

Geeez..I know these are very thoughtful folks. (Including Lloyd)

Donating their time and energy to third world countries, but personally..Charity begins at home. In my opinion.

That is why I volunteer at charity clinics in Houston too. I do A LOT for the poor in the US too. Ask my students how many times I even paid for a patients needed care such as imaging out of my meager teaching salary. I just don't go out getting the media coverage.

The benefit to getting media coverage is that the coverage sometimes results in others volunteering.

Apparently my going on fox got Goodwill some dental assistance.

So, the Optometry School would probably benefit from getting coverage as well as bringing the various needs to light, therefore doing more than you can even do yourself

As I said, I think it is good to give your services everywhere. I simply prefer to do it in my own environment.

I am certainly glad that folks like the other doctor and you assist the poor in other countries.

I just think more press about what is done and needs to be done right here would be helpful.

You still missed my point. I provide a lot of care for the poor here in the US. I do a lot more work here than abroad.

In fact, I got a presidential service award for my volunteer hours last year. Some one surprised me and submitted my hours for the award.

I got George Washington Honor Medal along a few other awards for my work here in the US.
"This program was intended as a way to say thank you to those whose projects, words or deeds reflect the best of the American spirit of volunteerism by offering constructive solutions to contemporary problems. We search for those doing good work in their communities, people or organizations bringing about the best in the spirit of America."

Just because I do international charity work does not mean I do not help those at home.

Are you going to help me get more press for what I do here at home?

All it takes is a phone call...news people are dying for stories..especially those that benefit the poor.
Try it sometime..you just pick up the phone and call.

Fox is pretty good..Unfortunately, you are at the tail end of an era.

The new era is one in which everything is fed from a central data base. So, it is tougher these days to get stories on, but they gotta fill space. And they prefer to fill it with feel good stuff.

I was on FOX once and Telemundo once.
