The congress of the European Society of Optometry is having a meeting together with the International Congress of Behavioral Optometry in Versailles, France, November 1st. to the 4th. 2002

Thirty one years ago I attended a congress of the European Society and I've been a member and officer of that organization every since. I'ts been one of the most fulfilling and enjoyable aspects of professional life.

Besides the excellent courses on childrens developmental vision and behavioral optometry, you will find your European colleagues very warm and welcoming. Over the years I've made many good friends with whom we've shared vacation times on both sides of the Atlantic.

Versailles is a beautiful, historic city with wonderful hotels. It is also a short, subway ride from the center of Paris.

For those interested, you can get full information by writing to the General secretary:

As a supplement to your piece, I have been a memberof the International Society of Contact Lens Specialists for some 35 years. The group was begun by the early greats in the contact lens field--John Neil from the U.S., Evershed-Martin from Great Britain, Soehnges from Germany, etc.

For many years, Europe dominated the meetings which were held every 18 months, in Europe. For the past 20 years, the U.S. has had a strong presence and meeting were held here every 3-4 years.

It is a small--less than 75 members from many countries world-wide-group that have become friends. A great resource when referring or receiving referrals world wide.
The 5 day meetings combine quality papers delivered from 8:00 a.m. thru noon time. The afternoons are playtime--the hosting member plans great sightseeing and dinners. Programs for women take place during the lecture hours. Most doctors bring their spouses, mistresesses, whatever.

This year we are meeting in June in Dublin.

Many of us extend the trip as a vacation. If you like to travel, it's a great way to write off the cost of travel and a significant part of the vacation.

If your practice incorporates a significant contact lens segment and you wish to learn more, you can contact me or Dr. Harold Davis in Chicago.

Times they are a changin'

Hi Ted:

That "Old Boys Club" better update its program. You wrote...

"Programs for women take place during the lecture hours. Most doctors bring their spouses, mistresesses, whatever. "

This past year 75% of the new AAO Contact Lens Diplomates were women. Any special program for the male escorts?
