ODwire.org's webinars and CEwire have proven that online education is definitely "a thing" that ODs are interested in (and btw the CEwire2018 show's reg page will be up next week, for those who are waiting.)

But I've long contended that face-to-face interactions are useful too. And sometimes, especially this time of year, we just want to escape the studio and see ODwire.org folks in the flesh.

Thus, we're trying something NEW as a pilot and i'm letting you know about it in this thread before we blast it out to everyone:

ODwire Live: Los Angeles and ODwire Live: The Bay Area

Yes! This is our first stab at a dinner "meet up", along with 2 free CE credits!

We've set up an hour of dinner & socializing, followed by the talks.

Dr. Crystal Brimer will be giving two talks at both events, the first a straight lecture, the second a 'workshop', all about the diagnosis of ocular surface disease.

I'll be there running things and hanging out with everyone [my job is easy!]

I hope all you California folks can make it out, it promises to be a fun night.

If you're coming, please fill out the RSVP form ASAP, as the space at the venues is limited -- 40 at each place, MAX. We're letting everyone else know about this tomorrow.

It looks like ODwire may become ODcable (more than one wire) BTW great kudos Gretchen From Dr. Bowling about you on Optometry Times Op-ed page...........Looks like you run the whole show as we always knew

Thanks Gretchyn, it is very different for us, in that it is the first time we've received an unrestricted educational grant -- I think the events are going to be a hoot!

Well I’m just happy to get out of Portland for a few days — I miss the sun :(

The meals at the shows should be good — we sprang for booze and the chocolate cannolis, not the default pineapple cake they were trying to foist on us (blech!!)

Thanks, Steve. Ernie Bowling and I worked very well together...very compatible. I'm looking forward to see what Optometry Times will be with Ben Casella beside me.

Paul, better call now if you want a seat at Chez Panisse! I went once and am dying to go back again. Alice Waters's memoir is out, and I'm on the library wait list. I bet it's a good read. :)

I too went once way back. For a world class eatery the ambiance as I recall was casual and the staff helpful. They did not take fame or themselves too seriously.

Practices could learn what is done in great restaurants to have a long waiting list and patrons come back for more.

The Berkeley show is 50% booked, less than a day after announcing it. This should be really fun!

Really hope to see some ODwire regulars there if you can make it, I know we've got a ton of people on the site from around the bay area.

I haven't been back to Berkeley in at least 15 years, looking forward to seeing how it has changed -- or stayed the same.

The LA event is tonight, looking forward to seeing everyone there! (the signups were higher than I anticipated, we opened up more registration space.)

BTW, I had someone ask me 'why are you doing in-person CE??' (ie, since CEwire has been so successful online, and travel is such a drag.)

My feeling is that there's a place for both types of CE. The bulk of your "book learning" can easily be handled online. And probably should be done online, just because it is infinitely more cost and time effective.

But "in-person" peer interaction and hands-on demos are very hard to replicate with an online simulation.

These in-person California events feature a didactic course, followed by a workshop where you can get up close and personal with the instruments in the talk. If they go well, we're hoping to replicate them in other cities.

An idea who time has come, if the optometric State Boards would allow more on line COPE credits.

Big thanks to everyone who turned out last night! In spite of the fires, we had a full house! (my overbooking scheme worked! :) )

It was fun getting out into the field and meeting everyone, I hope everyone that showed got a lot out of it.
