ROCHESTER, N.Y.—In recognition of World Cleanup Day (September 20), CooperVision has released “Turning Plastic into Purpose,” the latest installment in its video series featuring its innovative partnership with Plastic Bank. The episode tells the story of how plastic waste—when collected, processed, and reused—can make a positive impact on People + Planet.*1
“Turning Plastic into Purpose” highlights Asnaini, who turned to plastic collection after losing her job. What began as a short-term means of income evolved into a growing community recycling initiative. Asnaini discovered her entrepreneurial spirit and by building a small team of collectors, she expanded her impact while supporting her family, including funding her daughter’s education to become a pharmacist. Her story reflects how community-led recycling efforts can serve as a catalyst for both personal empowerment and broader environmental progress.
World Cleanup Day is dedicated to uniting millions of people, organizations, and governments to tackle global waste and help create a more sustainable world. CooperVision and Plastic Bank’s partnership is an example of that.

*Every CooperVision® net plastic neutral contact lens sold and distributed helps contribute to life-improving benefits in coastal communities heavily impacted by pollution and poverty. Net plastic neutrality is established by purchasing credits from Plastic Bank. A credit represents the collection and conversion of one kilogram of plastic that may reach or be destined for waterways. CooperVision purchases credits equal to the weight of plastic in participating brand orders in a specified time period. Plastic in participating brands is determined by the weight of plastic in the blister, the lens, and the secondary package, including laminates, adhesives, and auxiliary inputs (e.g. ink). Life-improving benefits refer to support provided to eligible Plastic Bank collectors and their family members through CooperVision's funding of Plastic Bank programs, which may include access to vision care, grocery vouchers, and other essentials.
†Ocean-bound plastic refers to waste plastic collected by Plastic Bank collectors that may reach or be destined for the ocean and/or waterways. Waste plastic collected through the program is converted to post-consumer recycled feedstock.
